Mental Health and Disability
Mental health is a critical component of overall well-being, yet it remains a pressing issue for many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). People with IDD are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health challenges, and the intersection of these needs often leads to gaps in care. At ABLE NH, we are committed to addressing this intersection and advocating for comprehensive, accessible mental health services for everyone.
Our efforts focus on:
- Tracking and supporting legislation that improves access to mental health services for individuals with IDD.
- Advocating for training programs that equip mental health professionals with the tools to provide trauma-informed, neuro-affirming care tailored to the unique needs of people with disabilities.
- Ensuring parity in mental health funding so that individuals with IDD are not overlooked in state and federal programs.
- Promoting crisis intervention policies that prioritize community-based solutions and reduce reliance on institutionalization or law enforcement.
Key challenges include a shortage of mental health professionals with expertise in IDD, stigma around mental health in the disability community, and systemic barriers to accessing care. Without appropriate supports, mental health needs in individuals with IDD can go unmet, leading to isolation, misdiagnosis, or even unnecessary hospitalization.
Through partnerships with families, self-advocates, and policymakers, ABLE NH is working to transform the mental health landscape. We believe in empowering individuals with IDD to lead full lives with the support they need to thrive mentally and emotionally.
If you’ve experienced barriers to mental health care or have ideas to improve the system, we want to hear from you! Together, we can create policies that honor the dignity and needs of all people.
